Hoshin Kocho Dojo

Welcome to the Hoshin Kocho Dojo. "Kocho" is Japanese for butterfly. The Kocho dojo butterfly represents both the fragility of life and the ability of one even weak-seeming individual to make a difference. That taijutsu is for the preservation of the weak when faced with the strong, as taijutsu techniques rely on movement and body mechanics, rather than brute force and muscle. It is also a tip of the hat to the motto "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee".

The butterfly also represents the transformative process of the individual from caterpillar (or white belt!) through the Hoshin development process to "tatsujin"- a fully realised and developed human being who has transcended their original limitations in body, mind and spirit. Such an individual is said, in traditional Japanese Budo (Warrior Way), to "fly on the martial winds".
